Glassman Speaker Series: Who's Shaking and Why: Understanding Recent Earthquakes Across the Globe In-Person
Earthquakes are among the most powerful natural phenomena shaping our planet. Their causes and patterns have long been a source of public curiosity and scientific investigation. In just the past few months, we've seen a massive seismic event (July 29, M8.8 Kamchatka earthquake and tsunami) and a deadly one (August 31, Afghanistan earthquake) killing more than 2,000 people. Closer to home — although usually quiet — Illinois has two seismic zones of concern. Dr. James Conder, director of the School of Earth Systems and Sustainability, will examine where earthquakes occur and why certain regions are more seismically active than others.
